Fun Facts of August

Hello to my fellow Morongo Basin residents! Because August is my personal favorite month of the year, I decided to look up a couple fun facts about August that you may not have known!

Did you know that the first Sunday of every August is Friendship Day? Friendship Day was first introduced by Joyce Hall; owner of the Hallmark Cards. She chose the month of August because it is one of the slower months since there are no major holidays. The idea was not very liked at first. Although people weren’t very pleased with the idea, the U.S. Congress decided to make Friendship Day an official observance in 1935. We are well past the first Sunday, but you can still celebrate Friendship Day and show your friends some appreciation!

Fun Fact #2: In the original Roman calendar, the month of August was called Sextilis. It was called Sextilis because August used to be the sixth month of the year, before the months January and February were added to the calendar. At the time, the month of August only had twenty-nine days until Julius Caesar created the Julian calendar in 45 BC. BONUS FACT: One of the symbols for the month of August is a flower!

Thanks for reading these fun facts that you may or may not have known about the month of August! Don’t forget to tell a friend that you appreciate them! Have a great rest of your August!

Until Next Time!
